The Domaine d'Abbadia
20 minutes from the Domaine de Bassilour by car, following the coastal path, you cannot miss the Domaine d'Abbadia along the Corniche road, it is a protected natural site at the top of which stands the castle now belonging to the coastal conservatory. This castle built between 1864 and 1884 in neo-Gothic architectural style, was the home of Antoine Abbadie, inveterate traveler, scientist, astronomer and somewhat crazy researcher, endowed with a great genius and who built this castle on the heights of Hendaye lives up to its image: decadent and majestic.
You can start with a walk in the estate all around the castle, to admire the sublime views of the striated and sheer cliffs of the coastal path. Nature in its pure and raw state! You will then not forget to go around the castle from the outside and admire the details, in particular the "gargoyles" which bear witness to Abbadie's passion for travel, with snakes, elephants, crocodiles and other animals...
You will then enter the castle, either through a guided tour (online timetables) or by self-tour, where you will be given a binder describing the main rooms with their oh so different styles! You will admire Abbadie's passion for the countries of the Orient, astronomy, reading and the neat details of each piece. You will wonder when you discover the observatory, a room in which part of the mobile roof was specifically built to open onto the Milky Way.
Take the time to read or listen to the story of this scientist and his discoveries: They will fascinate you!
Finally you will meditate while reading the quotes present on the walls of each room and laugh while discovering the famous “experiment of the holes” and its conclusion… We guarantee you in any case that you will not come out indifferent! The castle and its domain are for us one of the essential visits of the Basque country, between architecture and nature, between history and dream...
